Partial Conformance — Actively Improving

Our Commitment

Loaf Support is committed to making our website as accessible as possible to everyone, including people with disabilities. We are a small, home based bakery operating in San Marcos, Texas. We believe everyone should be able to browse our menu, learn about our ingredients, and place an order with dignity and ease.

We are working toward conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA, the international standard for digital accessibility.

Current Status

This website is partially conformant with WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Some content does not yet fully meet the standard, and we are actively addressing the gaps outlined below.

✅ What works well today

  • Semantic HTML structure — Pages use proper headings (h1–h4), lists, and landmark elements (nav, main, contentinfo) for screen reader navigation.
  • Forms have labels — The order form uses <label> elements and aria-label attributes on interactive controls.
  • Language declared — All pages include lang="en" for proper screen reader pronunciation.
  • Responsive design — The site adapts to different screen sizes, including tablets and phones, without loss of content.
  • Keyboard navigation — Core navigation and form controls are reachable via keyboard (Tab, Enter, Arrow keys).
  • Focusable controls — Buttons, links, and form inputs receive focus and can be activated without a mouse.
  • Descriptive link text — Navigation links clearly describe their destination.
  • Images with alt text — The site logo and key images include alternative text descriptions.

⚠️ What we're working on (known issues)

  • Skip navigation link — There is no "Skip to Content" link for keyboard and screen reader users to bypass repeated navigation. This is a known WCAG 2.1 Level A failure (2.4.1 Bypass Blocks).
  • Focus indicators — Visible focus styles (keyboard focus ring) are inconsistent across some interactive elements. We need a consistent, high-contrast focus outline.
  • Color contrast — Some text on light cream backgrounds may not meet the WCAG AA contrast ratio of 4.5:1. We are reviewing our color palette.
  • Dynamic content announcements — Toast notifications, cart updates, and form errors are visually displayed but not announced to screen readers via ARIA live regions.
  • Product images — Product photos loaded dynamically from our menu may lack alt text in all cases. This depends on what the baker uploads.
  • Order confirmation — The confirmation page loads order details asynchronously, which may not be announced to screen readers automatically.
  • Custom quantity controls — The +/- buttons in the order form are custom controls that may not fully communicate their state (current quantity) to assistive technology.
  • ARIA landmarks — While native HTML landmarks are used, we do not yet supplement them with ARIA roles for complex regions.

What We're Doing About It

We are a very small team, but accessibility matters to us. Here is our roadmap:

  • Short-term: Add a skip navigation link, improve focus indicators, and fix color contrast issues on key text.
  • Medium-term: Add ARIA live regions for toast and cart notifications, ensure all dynamic product images have alt text, and improve screen reader announcements on the order confirmation page.
  • Ongoing: We test changes manually with keyboard-only navigation and will seek feedback from users who rely on assistive technology.

We are committed to treating this as an ongoing effort, not a one-time fix.

Compatibility with Browsers and Assistive Technology

This website is designed to work with modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and operating system screen readers (VoiceOver on macOS/iOS, TalkBack on Android, and NVDA on Windows). We have not yet completed testing with JAWS or older browser versions.

Technical Specifications

We rely on the following technologies to make the website accessible:

  • HTML5 — Semantic document structure
  • WAI-ARIA — Used for some interactive controls (aria-label, aria-expanded for mobile nav)
  • CSS — Responsive layout that adapts to viewport size and zoom
  • JavaScript — Client-side interactions (cart, form submission) that aim to preserve keyboard operability
